Categories of Employment

Employees are placed into categories that determine eligibility for benefits, the treatment of their hours under wage and hour law, and other terms of employment. The categories used in this Handbook cover two dimensions:

  • A wage and hour classification of exempt or nonexempt under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act
  • A status classification of full time, part time, temporary, or inactive

New employees are also subject to an Introductory Period during the first 90 days of employment, regardless of classification. The details of each are set out in the Introductory Period and Employee Classifications policies that follow.
